The brief descriptions below are designed to familiarize you with our medical staff's training, professional credentials and work experience.


Stephen D. Covington, MD

Dr. Covington attended the University of California at Los Angeles from 1965 to1968. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Premedical Sciences from the University of California San Francisco Medical Center with highest honors and earned his M.D. Degree from UCSFMC in 1972. He completed internship and residency in Internal Medicine at LAC-Harbor General Hospital in 1975 and completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology in 1977 at UCLA-Wadsworth VA.

Dr. Covington is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, American Gastroenterological Association and Ventura County Medical Association. Other memberships include Southern California Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy as well as the Southern California Society of Gastroenterology. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He has been practicing in Ventura County since 1977.


Charles Menz, MD

Dr. Menz earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at Stanford in 1971. He went to the University of Utah and earned his M.D. in 1975. Dr. Menz completed his residency in Internal Medicine at UCLA in 1978. He has been on the faculty at UCLA since completing his Gastroenterology fellowship there in 1980.

Dr. Menz is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He is also a member of the Southern California Society of Gastroenterology, where he has served as president.


Kip D. Lyche, MD

Dr. Lyche earned his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1982 from UCLA. He went to the University of California, San Diego and received his M.D. in 1986. His internship and residency was completed in 1989 at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and he was named Outstanding Intern for 1986-1987. He completed his fellowship training in Gastroenterology at UCSD in 1991.

Dr. Lyche is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and the American College of Gastroenterology. He is also a member of the California Medical Association and the Ventura County Medical Society. He has published extensively and is actively involved in clinical trials for Hepatitis C. He has been in practice in Ventura County since 1997.


Tesu Lin, MD

Dr.  Lin earned his Medical Degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and attended the University of Wisconsin for Internal Medicine residency. He completed his Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. Dr. Lin served as an Assistant Professor in Gastroenterology at Northwestern University Medical School before joining Island View Gastroenterology Associates.

Dr. Lin joined Island View Gastroenterology Associates in 2001.He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. His major interests are in Gut Immunology and Tumor Biology, in which he has published extensively in peer review journals and has received NIH funding in the past. He speaks English, Japanese and Spanish.


Benito A. Pedraza, MD

Dr. Pedraza earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1995 from Boston College. He graduated from Temple University Medical School in 2000 and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in 2003. He completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center where he was named fellow of the year in 2006.

Dr. Pedraza joined Island View Gastroenterology Associates in July 2006. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Other memberships include the American College of Gastroenterology and the Southern California Society of Gastroenterology. He is bilingual in English and Spanish.


Chetan Gondha, MD

Dr. Gondha earned his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Washington University in St. Louis in 1999.  He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed his MD degree in 2003.  He completed his internship and residency at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia in 2006.  He completed his fellowship in gastroenterology at Emory University in 2010.  He joined Island View Gastroenterology Associates in the fall of 2010.

D. Gondha  is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the American College of Gastroenterology.  He is also a member of the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society.


Joel Alpern, MD

Dr. Alpern, who was born and raised in Ventura County, earned his Bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University in Chicago in 2000, graduating Magna Cum Laude.  He next attended Northwestern University Medical School and earned his M.D. in 2000.  His internship and residency in Internal Medicine were completed at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta in 2007.  Following this, his fellowship in Gastroenterology & Hepatology was completed at the UCLA School of Medicine and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in 2011.

Dr. Alpern served as an academic gastroenterologist in the UCLA School of Medicine following his training, and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the UCLA faculty.  He joined the Island View Gastroenterology practice in 2013. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, along with the Phi Beta Kappa academic honors society.  He has published peer-reviewed research studies on the biology underlying both Crohn’s Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and has participated in clinical trials pertinent to liver diseases.  He speaks English, Spanish, and Portuguese.


Laya Nasrollah, MD

Dr. Nasrollah earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from University of Texas at Dallas in 2005 and graduated Magna Cum Laude. She received an extraordinary medical student award in 2000 and was a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta.  She received her Doctor of Medicine  degree from University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 2010. When she was a medical student, she was an officer of the Gold Humanism Honor Society.   She completed her residency from the University of Arizona in 2013 and Gastroenterology Fellowship in Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center. In 2014, she conducted research on the Effect of New Hep C treatment on minority population. She joined Island View Gastroeneterology Associates in 2016.

Dr. Nasrollah is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Medical Association.  In her spare time, she enjoys playing the piano, kick boxing, Persian calligraphy, skiing, hiking and traveling.  She very fluent in Farsi.


Tatyana Mitina, PA-C

Tatyana graduated from Ivanovo State Institute of Medicine in Russia in 1992 where she earned her MD degree.  She is licensed to practice medicine in Russia.  In 1996, she earned her certificate in Pediatric Gastroenterology from Lviv State Institute of Medicine in Ukraine.  After moving to the United States, she attended Los Angeles Valley College from 200-2002 where she took courses in preparation for training as a Physician Assistant.  Tatyana earned her PA certificate from University of California Davis in 2005.   She joined Island View Gasroenterology Associates in 2007.

Tatyana is a member of The American Academy of Physician Assistants and The California Academy of Physician Assistants. She speaks English, Russian, Ukrainian and Polish.
